Everyone wants to have a nice smile, fresh breath and health gums. But maintaining our oral health isn’t always a priority. With our busy lifestyles, work, kids, tax, social, it’s easier to just brush once per day.
The trouble with that is, a lot of the food and drink we consume sticks to our teeth and contains ingredients that cause damage to the surface of the teeth if not removed. Which means more unnecessary trips to the dentist!
So we’ve put together some tips to help you maintain your oral hygiene routine throughout the day!
Tip NO. 1 Get an electric toothbrush
Electric toothbrushes are so advanced now that brushing you teeth is now much more fun. What kind of electric toothbrush you ask. Well heres what to look for in a good electrice toothbrush.
As we know there are 100’s of electric toothbrushes in the electric toothbrushes market. So here what to look for in an electric toothbrush.
Get an Electric toothbrush with a timer!
A good electric toothbrush should have a timer to help you brush for the recommended two minutes. We think you should spend 20 seconds per quarter of the mouth. A timer will alert you at 20 second intervals so you know when to move on.
Look for an electric toothbrush with different cleaning modes!
Ideally you want an electric toothbrush that feature different cleaning modes for each mouth area. There is a good choice of modes, from standard clean setting and a deep-clean mode to modes for brushing the tongue or more sensitive teeth. Alongside that you may find different speed settings.
An electric toothbrush that has pressure sensor is a safe bet.
A pressure sensor to prevent you pushing too hard against your teeth, is very useful when taking care of you teeth, using to much force can actually damage both your teeth and gums. It can cause enamel erosion and receding gums.
Electric toothbrush that cleans you tongue is what you want.
Having a healthy clean tongue can improve your sense of taste and reduce bad breath.
A lot of the bacteria in your mouth resides on your tongue. The Philips Sonicare Diamond Clean smart has a special tongue cleaning brush head. Most of us forget to clean our tongues as part of our daily dental routine, try to add it into yours as it has great benefits to your oral health.
Take a look at you tongue, look for coated areas, the tongue should be a uniform pinkish colour.
Electric toothbrush brush head replacement?
You should look for an electric tooth brush that lets you know when to change the brush head.
Tip NO. 2 Get yourself a Water Pik or Air Floss.
Conventional flossing can be a pain in the back tooth, it’s fiddly and awkward, sometimes the floss can feel like its cutting into your gums if you’re not doing it right. But an Air Floss or Water Pik are very different and much more effective at removing food debris from in between the teeth.
You’re probably thinking, that’s a lot to carry around during the day. Well it is kind of a lot to have with you plus all the other things you need to have with you daily. So here is tip number 3
Tip NO. 3 Rinse you mouth out with Water or Mouthwash.
As simple as that sounds it actually one of the best ways to clear you mouth out after a meal. If its not convenient to carry an electric toothbrush and an air floss to the restaurant then simply washing your mouth out with water if mouthwash after the meal is a good idea, until you get home. Some places sell small bottles which are easier to carry around, if yo can’t find any in the shops come get some from us.
Tip NO.4 Use a Tongue scrapper!
It is estimated that approximately 85% of all halitosis cases start within the mouth; of these, 50% are because of build up on the tongue. Thus, tongue cleaning gains importance as a means of bad breath management.
When we sleep, our digestive system is still functioning, it continues removing toxins from our body by depositing them onto the surface of our tongue. If we don’t scrape away these toxins, they get reabsorbed by the body and can lead to respiratory difficulties, digestive problems, and a compromised immune system.
After enjoying a meal, especially when you eat foods that have strong aromas such as onion and garlic, bad breath is created when bacteria from the food particles left behind on your tongue release strong smelling volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), according to the IOSR Journal of Dental and Medical Sciences.
Another benefit of tongue cleaning is it helps your taste buds taste foods better! Dead cells and food debris form a layer on the surface of the tongue after eating, which can clog your taste buds and leave a metallic taste in your mouth.
Tongue Scrapers come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. One of the best on the market is the Amano tongue cleaner which you can purchase on Amazon.
